Ten Books to Read Before You Grow Up

May 13, 2018 By Dawn Burdett

Reading is a highly important part of life, and the more you read, the more you begin to enjoy new stories and genres. Every kid should be encouraged to read a lot, and there are some books that will spark that motivation. Here are ten books that I think every little person should read before they grow up.

Charlotte’s Web – EB White

This story about a quirky pig named Wilbur and his spider friend Charlotte is a true childhood classic that will capture your heart both as a child and later in life. There are many important themes that come out throughout this enthralling and fun-loving story with loveable characters.

Oh, The Places You’ll Go – Dr Seuss

This famous Dr. Seuss includes you as the main character! You’ll travel through many exciting lands and meet unique and interesting characters who will keep you motivated to achieve all your lifelong dreams! This is truly an optimistic book for all Dr. Seuss lovers.

Winnie the Pooh – AA Milne

Everyone loves a good story involving the honey-loving bear Winnie the Pooh, but the original book is a true work of art. Kids will learn about the importance of respect and companionship as they follow Christopher Robin through the engrossing world of the Hundred Acre Wood.

Corduroy – Don Freeman

Corduroy is a childhood favorite of many, telling the story of a live teddy bear who ventures out into his department store in search of his lost overall button. This is a great story about perseverance, responsibility, and friendship.

The Ugly Duckling – Hans Christian Andersen

This Hans Christian Andersen classic teaches us to find the beauty in all parts of life, even when we may be feeling down. Kids love this book as they learn that anybody can grow up to be beautiful and successful and that they shouldn’t let negative words get them down.

The Velveteen Rabbit – Margery Williams

This is a tale about the power of love, as a stuffed rabbit attempts to become real by harnessing the love of his owner. Adults and children alike enjoy this story of the loveable little rabbit that really tugs at the heartstrings.

The Giving Tree – Shel Silverstein

Shel Silverstein had quite a knack for writing stories that combined humor with raw emotion, and The Giving Tree is no exception. This story about a boy and an apple tree is a coming of age story that really reflects on life.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs – Ron Barrett

Many may think of the 2009 animated film when they hear this title, but the original book is just as exciting and makes for a great childhood read.

The Polar Express – Chris Van Allsburg

This classic holiday book has been winning children over for decades, providing a message of hope, warmth, and generosity that is perfect for anyone during the holiday season.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – Roald Dahl

No children’s book list is complete without a Roald Dahl entry, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is an adventure full of laughs, tears, and excitement. Kids will learn about sharing and empathy as they navigate the magical world of Wonka in this book.
